Who Is a Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD/RDN)?

Hand Writing
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree with course work is approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Coursework typically includes food and nutrition sciences, food service systems management, business, economics, computer science, sociology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, and chemistry.

Nutritionist

Every Registered Dietitian is a nutritionist, but not every nutritionist is a Registered Dietitian.

Depending on the state in which you practice, you can call yourself a nutritionist without any formal nutrition education, training, licensing, or certification, but it’s illegal to call yourself a dietitian without proper credentialing.

What Can an RD/RDN Do for You?

When you need food and nutrition information based on facts or need to know how a healthy diet improves health and fight disease, you can rely on qualified professionals in the field. RD/RDN provides preventive and medical nutrition therapy services in a wide variety of employment settings including hospitals (inpatient and outpatient settings), long-term care facilities, home health care, food service, research, education, public health/community, government facilities, and private practice.
An RD/RDN conducts a nutritional assessment regarding all the food, beverages, medications, and supplements that are part of the patient’s diet to help diagnose and treat illnesses. RD/RDN also creates personalized nutrition plans and positive lifestyle changes for their clients and helps them maintain healthy eating habits based on their medical needs.
